Tenerife - Hotel Rural El Patio.
The area surrounding the seaside town of Garachico was known as the malpais or “badlands” when this farm was founded in the early 16th century.
There’s certainly nothing unfortunate about a visit today, though. The main farm buildings have been converted into a luxury hotel around a courtyard that is home to palms and dragon trees planted more than 500 years ago. Rooms have terracotta-tiled floors, beamed ceilings and private patios, while common areas have a plantation-home style. It also has its own stretch of black volcanic sand and there are walking paths around the three nature reserves that surround the farm. Details: Double rooms are from €83 per night, B&B with a three-night minimum stay (00 34 922 133 280, hotelpatio.com)
